Why furnaces fail when it is coldest

A furnace is most likely to quit when it works hardest. The usual culprits are an ignitor or flame sensor that has worn out or gotten dirty, an inducer motor or pressure switch that is not proving draft, a clogged filter that causes overheating, or a control board or gas valve problem. Many of these are quick repairs when they are caught with the right tests. Replacing parts without a diagnosis often is not.

A safety inspection on every no-heat call

Gas heat deserves more than a parts swap. Every no-heat call includes a combustion safety inspection of the heat exchanger, flue draft, and gas pressure, along with carbon monoxide testing. A cracked heat exchanger, a blocked flue, or poor combustion can put dangerous gases in your home, and those problems can be invisible without testing.

If we find a safety problem, we explain it plainly and show you what we found.

What to check before you call

Start with these simple checks:

  • Make sure the thermostat is set to heat and a few degrees above the room temperature.
  • Check that the furnace breaker has not tripped and the furnace power switch is on.
  • Replace a dirty filter.
  • Make sure the furnace's access panel is fully closed, since many furnaces will not run with it off.

Do not attempt gas repairs yourself. If you smell gas, leave the home and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Keep working carbon monoxide detectors on every level of your home.

Questions

Furnace repair: common questions

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

Common causes include the thermostat fan set to on instead of auto, a dirty flame sensor or failed ignitor shutting the burners off, a clogged filter causing overheating, or a gas supply problem. Set the fan to auto, check the filter, and call us if it continues.

Why does my furnace keep turning on and off?

Short cycling usually points to restricted airflow from a dirty filter or blocked vents, a flame sensor problem, or an overheating limit switch. It can also signal a larger issue, so have it checked.

What does a yellow furnace flame mean?

A healthy flame is mostly blue. A yellow or orange flame can indicate poor combustion, which can produce carbon monoxide. Turn the furnace off and call for service.

How often should I change my furnace filter?

Check it monthly and replace it every one to three months depending on the filter type, pets, and dust. A clean filter protects the furnace and keeps airflow healthy.
