How a heat pump works in a Kentucky winter

A heat pump moves heat instead of making it by burning fuel. In summer it works like an air conditioner, moving heat out of your home. In winter it reverses the process and pulls heat from the outdoor air, even when it feels cold. Modern cold-climate models keep heating efficiently well below freezing, which makes them a practical option for Central Kentucky.

Many systems include electric auxiliary heat for the coldest nights, and dual-fuel setups pair a heat pump with a gas furnace that takes over when it is more effective or economical to do so.

Common heat pump problems

Defrost control and reversing valve failures, an outdoor unit that stays iced over, auxiliary heat running too often, low refrigerant, and dirty coils are the most common service issues. Some frost on the outdoor unit and a bit of steam during the defrost cycle are normal. A unit that stays encased in ice, blows cool air for long stretches, or runs constantly without keeping up is not.

Heat pump, or furnace and air conditioner?

The right choice depends on your current heating fuel, your ductwork, your electric rates, and your comfort goals. A heat pump replaces both heating and cooling with one system, while a gas furnace paired with an air conditioner may be the better fit where natural gas is available and economical. A dual-fuel system can combine the strengths of both.

Questions

Heat pumps: common questions

Why is my heat pump blowing cool air in winter?

Heat pump air is delivered at a lower temperature than furnace air, so it can feel cooler even when it is working properly, and a brief stretch of cool air during defrost is normal. If it blows cool air for long periods or the house will not warm up, call us for a diagnosis.

Is ice on my heat pump normal?

A light frost is normal, and the unit clears it with periodic defrost cycles. A unit that stays covered in ice usually has a defrost control, airflow, or refrigerant problem and needs service.

Do heat pumps work when it is below freezing?

Yes. Modern cold-climate heat pumps keep heating below freezing, and many systems add auxiliary heat or a gas furnace for the coldest weather.

What does emergency heat mean on my thermostat?

Emergency heat runs the backup heat source instead of the heat pump itself, which is usually more expensive to operate. It is meant for when the heat pump is not working. If you find yourself using it, call us.
