Start with measurement, not products

Indoor air quality problems vary from home to home, and the right fix depends on what is actually going on. We measure humidity and airflow and look at your system's filtration before recommending anything, so you only buy equipment that will change how your home feels.

Humidity: too much in summer, too little in winter

Kentucky summers push indoor humidity up, which can make a home feel sticky, encourage mold growth, and make an air conditioner work harder. Winter heating can leave the air very dry. Indoor humidity between roughly 30 and 50 percent is generally comfortable and healthy.

Depending on the problem, the answer may be a whole-home dehumidifier, a whole-home humidifier, or correcting airflow or equipment sizing. We tell you which, and which not.

Filtration, UV light, and fresh air ventilation

Better filtration can capture more dust and allergens, but a filter that is too restrictive can choke airflow and hurt your system, so the filter and the system have to be matched. UV germicidal lamps can help keep the coil surface cleaner but are not a cure-all. Energy and heat recovery ventilators (ERV and HRV) bring in fresh air while limiting energy loss, which can help tightly sealed homes.

We tell you honestly what each option can and cannot do before you spend a dollar.

Questions

Indoor air quality: common questions

What humidity level should I keep in my home?

Between roughly 30 and 50 percent is a common target. Higher levels can encourage mold and dust mites, and lower levels can feel dry and irritate skin and sinuses.

Will a higher-efficiency air filter harm my system?

It can if it is too restrictive for your ductwork and blower. Filters should be matched to the system. We can recommend options that improve filtration without choking airflow.

Do UV lights really work?

UV lamps can help limit growth on the coil and in the airstream, but they do not replace good filtration, humidity control, and clean ducts. We tell you whether they make sense for your situation.

What is an ERV or HRV?

They are ventilation systems that bring in fresh outdoor air while recovering much of the energy from the outgoing air. They can help tightly sealed homes that feel stale.
